Overview
The Ohio University Center of Sports Administration is proud to present the first annual OHIO Sports Business Academy July 18-25, 2010. This week-long Academy focuses on establishing a basis for which the future leaders in sports can begin their journey into the ever-changing world of sports. The OHIO Sports Business Academy will provide a full academic course worth of material in one week of work through classroom settings and practical experiences.

Academy participants will have the opportunity to learn from some of the top professors and sport executives within the sports industry, participate in practical experiences through a collegiate summer baseball league team based out of Athens, Ohio (Southern Ohio Copperheads), embark on field trips to professional facilities in Ohio, and participate in evening activities.

Since the Academy covers a full academic course in one week, it is imperative that students arrive at Ohio University ready to study and work hard. The Academy provides a college-level environment in which the professors and counselors will expect each participant to work hard, while having fun learning about the sports business world.

Along with the OHIO Sports Business Academy’s academic and experiential benefits, the Academy provides the opportunity to earn college credit. Participants are eligible, for an additional fee, to earn three (3) credit hours (in a quarter system). These credits will fulfill the first sport management requirement within the Ohio University Sport Management degree track (SASM 201). The credits are also transferrable as elective credits to most higher education institutions. Please contact the institution of your choice for clarification on college credit transfer requirements.

Qualifications
The OHIO Sports Business Academy is for students who are entering their junior or senior year in high school or entering their freshman year of college. The Academy recommends applicants have a grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale) and demonstrate outstanding extracurricular involvement. Applying students should also have a strong interest in the sports business industry and a passion for hard work.

Why OHIO?
The Ohio University Sport Management undergraduate program is regarded for its excellence in preparing students for careers in professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, amateur sports, youth sports, sports agencies, and corporate positions with a sport-related component. OHIO’s undergraduate sport management program received program approval from the Sport Management Program Review Council (SMPRC), which accounts for only 10 percent of U.S. sport management programs.

Along with the Sport Management undergraduate program, the Sports Administration and Facility Management graduate program is widely regarded as the top sports administration program in the country. Under the guidance of Walter O’Malley, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer and former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the first ever sports administration program was started at Ohio University in 1966. Since its founding, the graduate program has grown an alumni base of over 1,200 members within every aspect of the sporting industry making the Ohio University Sports Administration brand one of the strongest and most respected in the entire sporting industry.

In addition to the success and notoriety surrounding both the graduate and undergraduate programs at Ohio University, the state of Ohio provides students with a vast array of practical experiences unseen in other states. With six professional teams, 194 colleges and universities, and over 10 minor league teams all within the state boundaries; the practical opportunities are endless.

In addition, the Southern Ohio Copperheads baseball team, based in Athens, Ohio, is run by Ohio sports business students, and competes in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. The Copperheads provide undergraduates and graduates the opportunity to run a minor league style baseball team from the ground up. The students are in charge of soliciting sponsorships, ticket sales, marketing, game day operations, and concession sales, among many other tasks.
